Do you have a child that loves spending time with animals? Is your child shy or reluctant to read out loud? If so, our furry, wet-nosed tutors are here for you!

Join the Peninsula Humane Foundation for our summer Dog Tales Reading Program. This program enables elementary-age children to read a short story of their choice to a dog. The intent of the program is to make reading fun, boost confidence, and improve reading skill.

The program will run every Saturday during July and August at the Books A Million on Hampton Roads Center Parkway. The following dates will be offered: July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30; and August 6, 13, 20, and 27.

Sessions are 30 minutes long and offered from 2:00-2:30 and 2:30-3:00. Each child will be able to read to 2 dogs for 15 minutes each. Children should either bring a book to read or arrive 15 minutes before their session in order to select a book. If help is needed, store associates will be on hand to help select an age-appropriate book.

Children with hearing impairment: If you have a child with hearing impairment, we're here to help! At most of our sessions, a volunteer will be on hand that is fluent in American Sign Language. Simply call us in advance so we can ensure this volunteer will be available.

Appointments are not required in order to participate in Dog Tales. However, space is limited, so you are welcome to sign up in advance to secure your spot. Each child may only register for one time slot per Saturday.
Parents must remain on site during the reading session and a signed waiver must be filled out before the first reading session. Click here to contact us and reserve your spot today!
